Let me lay this out for you…Last Friday Livi had a school assembly and was given three awards. One being a High Honors certificate for maintaining a 3.5 – 3.99 GPA. When I went to the assemble I couldn’t help but notice the eclectic wardrobe worn by the students. This one caught my immediate attention:
Yup! That is his underwear. To his left is a family member and he already passed three (3) other school teachers. Not one told him to pick his pants up! He was merely adjusting them in this photo.
Now, as some of you know, Livi takes horse riding lessons and will be in her first competition this weekend. Well, I had to purchase gear this week which included her new riding boots. She was instructed to wear the boots all week in order to break them in before the big day. I took her to purchase jeggings so she could wear them with her boots. This was the outfit she wore this Wednesday and she was removed from her class for a violation of the dress code. WHAT?
Of coarse I was assisting interviews for one of our criminal cases and Livi did not want to call me. They had half a day and she was forced to remain with one of the counselors. Okay… seriously!?
So, I told Livi the next morning she needed to ask her counselor to call me and bring me the code of conduct book.
Here is what the book lists….
Notice I highlighted #5 because Livi explained a girl wearing a short shirt exposing her midriff walked past the same teacher who told Livi her outfit was not within regs and did not address the girl with the short shirt. Instead she sent Livi to her counselor and said she was not allowed to wear leggings to school. Livi walked to the main office, sad and confused and asked her counselor why she was removed from class when there were clearly other violations from students in class. The counselor told Livi she did not know and that she was too busy to investigate. She gave Livi the option to call me and change or remain in her office until the day was over.
Note: The other highlighted area is really the only area that mention pants. “Supposedly” her infraction was that she was wearing leggings and was not allowed to do so. Now, notice what #6 states. “Undergarments must not be visible at any time.”
This is unacceptable! I was furious they made her sit in the office and humiliated her by making her teachers bring down her work. Not to mention have her miss class instruction. I was relieved to hear when Livi’s math teacher brought her work down she asked, “Why are you here.” Livi explained and the teacher walked back to her class to bring the same “short shirt” girl down to the counselor. She then asked the counselor “before you bring students out of class for dress code violations dressed like Livi you need to look around for students dressed like this girl (short shirt girl) who is practically naked in class.”
YES! Finally someone with sense!
Okay, so of coarse no one called me. Shocker! Instead of calling and flipping out…I sent Livi back to school today in this:
I told her to be polite if you are asked to go to the counselor again and give your teacher my highlighted code of conduct book, tell her you were told to remain in class and for her to call me!
And…. nothing today. 🙂
I am saddened that they are wasting time with honor roll students and sending parents emails explaining that “today a student came to school with drugs, or a gun, or whatever. Focus on making our schools safe and punishing students who clearly undermine teachers. Stop being scared of our youth and SAY SOMETHING to them!
