Hodge Podge Decor

So, I am back in TX.  It’s been about 9 or 10 years since I was here last.

I won’t sweat the small stuff.  I can only claim it and home I get something back for the damages.  On a more positive note….  I was happy my best friend Jason was able to come help me flip my new property and make it a more sassy suitable home for Mini me and I.  I spent about a month helping him flip his and make it a home again.  So, what better payback than for him to return the favor.  Gotta love those you can count on.

Let me tell you the trip was long, but entertaining.  He is hilarious!  We spent the first few days painting multi-colored walls to suit my “hodge podge” style.  The house definitely needed some TLC.

Before it was dark and gloomy.

Now it’s fresh, clean, and inviting. (photo below: paint on left was still a little wet)

I love my new space!  I plan to post more before and after photos when I break down the rooms.  I am so happy we were able to complete 90% of the unpack in only 4 short days.  I am now getting all the other necessities in place and utilities taken care of.  I am looking forward to this assignment and the focus on my new career.  I am excited to meet the team and hope to learn a lot about how we conduct forensic operations.

I have to tell this quick story.  I chose my first “new home” post title “Hodge Podge Decor” based off of my visit to a huge furniture warehouse with JW.  He needed a smaller kitchen table and I was hot, sticky, and full of paint.  He couldn’t make up his mind on what style he should go with, which caused me to have a momentary Tourette syndrome situation.  Convo went like this… Me:  “JDubs did you check over here?”  JW:  “No, I don’t know if I like that one.” ……5 isles later……still no decision made……. Me: “JDubs, what about here?  They’ve got a hodge podge of shit over here.”  JW:  *in the loudest NY accent ever* “Whhhhaaaat?  Look, they gotta hodge podge of shit ova hea, Margaret!”  Ok, I freaking died.  Who the hell is Margaret?  Apparently, he said I sounded just like this.  He threw in Margaret for a little flare.  I just cried laughing.  This is a normal day in my life.

So, I must admit I love “hodge podge” style.  I buy things that make me happy.  Things that are interesting.  Not a “hoarder” decor style, just whimsical and unique.

I recently posted a few finds from a collage artist on my Instagram @inkcosmetics.

Here are a few more of my favorite finds and treasures.

inkinsideout-anna castillo-decor-Hodge Podge Decor-June-2014This is by far my most treasured piece.  The Noonan‘s had this made for me by Mrs. Noonan.  It is a pencil masterpiece of my lovely daughter Olivia (aka Mini Me).  Here is the inspiration.

This is how I see my little girl even though she is 15 years old now.  I LOVE YOU LIVI!  Thank you Pat and Angie Noonan!  This is the best gift I ever received.

This is a photo of my guardian angel when he was in the USMC at 18 years old.  I miss you and love you so much Dad!

Here is a prime example of “hodge podge” decor.  The photo in the center is of my sexy and beautiful Grandmother.  A woman who I know will be a Saint one day.  Grandma, thank you for praying for us every morning at 0600!  I am grateful for all you and Madrina do for us.  Starting from the left:  A hand made glass vase from my travels to Belgium, in the center is a smudging abalone shell, and to the right is a little good luck turtle I picked up from Singapore.

If you are in the DC area you can pick up this candle holder from the DC market for about $35.  I purchased two for this home and I love them!

Here is another recent find.  I found this art piece from Alex Zeng at TJMaxx.  I bought another one of Marilyn Monroe and placed them in my living room.  Check the final photo on our Instagram.

inkinsideout-anna castillo-decor-Hodge Podge Decor-June-2014I found these post card holders for $1.00 USD each in Warsaw, Poland and the postcards from the Rene Magritte Museum in Belgium.

There are many more items I want to share with you but I will wait until I post the final rooms.

XOXO Besos,

Anna Castillo
