So you want to be a makeup artist? Let’s not bore you with fluff…instead here are 6 quick tips to get you on the right track.
1. Master your talent!
No one wants an artist who is just “okay” at what they do! These days expect your work to be on TV, Film, Photography, or Social Media! It better look it’s best! Practice! Practice! Practice!
(Side note: Also, research great photographers who want to pair up with you. Capturing your artistry with video and photography is essential to a successful career in beauty!)
2. Always look your best!
Take care of your skin, for the love of the art…please blend your makeup, and always put your best face forward! You never know who you will run into! Share your makeup looks on your social media pages to showcase your work. This will get the word out there so people know who you are. Hashtag (#) words/phrases related to your appropriate venue! i.e. #inkcosmetics 😉
3. Get educated
Okay… I started makeup artistry on my own and continued education after all my trials and errors! No biggie! Education is key! Know the skin, know the products, know what they do, when not to use them, etc. The internet is full of free information, but if possible attend professional classes. I took about a year to get my esthetician license. It was worth the time but I do love my freelance work! I recommend you also try to hook up with your favorite Makeup Artist for one-on-one tutorials. Trust me, it will be worth it in the end.
4. Stay relevant and in touch
Keep in contact with your clients! Yes, I am a celebrity makeup artist and active duty Air Force member. I have been blessed to be surrounded by other fashion designers and MUA’s who have passed on my resume to some fun and interesting people. Although, both jobs keep me busy you must make time for those who continue to support your talent and brand!
5. Attend the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show
Six times per year, in six cities worldwide, the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, features keynote presentations, classes, demos and more from the best artists in the business.
6. Get your work online.
Website based portfolios are a great way to get your work to the masses. Let us not forget social media! We have our brand on all social media outlets as @inkcosmetics, a product site at www.shopinkcosmetics.com, portfolio work at www.inkcosmetics.com, and a behind the scenes blog (you are reading it now) at www.inkinsideout.com. It is extremely important to stay connect with those who support your work and products (if you venture this way)! They are the reason you exists! Word of mouth is key! People need to see your talent is making a difference and your products actually work!
Yes, you can do it all! It’s about balance! It’s about having a good home support system! AND… It’s about living your dreams!
I hope these tips will empower you to reach your goals and never give up!
