Did I catch your attention?
Yes, my name is Mercia and I am some what of a hippie. Don’t get me wrong, I love my hair, nails, and clothes done, I love shopping and going out. I especially love my family outings, and Disney World is like a second home. I am starting to really get into fashion and makeup (under the influence of Anna and my daughter) but I also love the fact I am so open to “New Age” stuff. Not sure how “New Age” it is, since these things existed prior to most treatments (medical, psychoanalytical, and so on). My daughter calls me a bohemian chic. I think that fits perfect!
Back to the topic…
I believe both modern and complimentary/alternative medicines…approaches…treatments offer us so much more. Forty percent of Americans report using approaches “developed outside of mainstream Western, or conventional, medicine for specific conditions or overall well-being” according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Now I am for both alternative and complimentary approaches (complimentary is used along with conventional treatments, while alternative is used in place with existing conventional approaches). As a therapist I have used relaxation techniques, along with conversational therapy. Relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation, help the body relax during stressful therapeutic work. It’s also a method to focus the mind on goals.
As a jewelry maker, I use the energy in crystal gemstones to help others tap into their own energy (click on my name at the end to access my site) and the energy they want to attract. Crystals are used to enhance, improve, and balance the life force (mind, body, and spirit) and energy around us. Crystals have a long history in healing, and can be found in the bible. According to Crystal Well-Being website (http://www.crystalwellbeing.co.uk/introcrystalhealing.php) crystal energy is unique and it is “this resonance is said to give crystals their healing abilities. Applying this resonance in a coherent way can help to restore stability and balance to the bodies energy systems, stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms”.
I also use reiki, crystals, saging, and chanting in my own life. I am also a slacking Nicheren Buddhist (I have to admit I have not been consistently practicing for the last couple of years!!). I truly love surrounding myself with all of this but have never forgotten my roots. I go to the doctor, but use essential oils to cut down using chemicals. I use home remedies as often as possible, but recognize when modern medicine intervention is a bonus and needed. I love being a Buddhist but never forget my foundation of Catholicism. I may not agree with all of the dogma, but it’s where I started and it is close to my heart since it’s where I spent much of my younger days with my grandmothers. I find the Catholic rituals beautiful, I still have a rosary, and plan to make myself a rosary in honor of my grandmothers.
I am hoping in writing this, you the reader will be willing to take in all sides. Be open to all the experiences life has to offer you, your mind, your body and your spirit.
As always, stay positive,
